Prerequisites: ENGL 10803, ENGL 20803, and at least one 10000- or 20000-level ENGL/WRIT/CRWT course. Development of the American novel from its origins through the beginning of the 20th century. Readings may include works by James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott, Henry James, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Frank Norris, and will emphasize the novels' close ties to contemporaneous social, scientific, and political issues.
